I believe the potential for innovative or artistic growth is in artists, scientists and engineers challenging one another to dream of impossible possibilities.

Corning Residency

DREAMING OF IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBILITIES: TOM PATTI IS 2015/16 SPECIALTY GLASS RESIDENT ARTIST “For me, Corning’s Sullivan Park is a gateway to a new universe of ideas and questions and I share Corning’s long-term confidence that scientists and artists have a common belief in the impossible. We both search for the unknown. To study and work at Corning was to explore material and ideas in a new way that disconnected me from my studio. I think complimentary disciplines are a means to innovation and insight.

Corning is the intellectual hub of contemporary investigation into innovative glass development and study. Corning and I share a desire to blur the boundaries between traditional science and art. For me, Corning is not only about glass, but the individuals who redefined it between the 19th and 21st centuries. Corning laid the foundation during the 20th century that blurred the definition between art and science – the visual with the abstract.

Our engagement was a catalyst for the imagination of both artist and scientist that offered opportunities for innovation through exploring glass materials and processes.” READ MORE

125 Icons, 125 Years |Pratt Institute

Pratt Institute’s milestone 125th anniversary with “125 Icons: A Celebration of Works by Pratt Alumni and Faculty 1887-2012,” featured iconic works created by Pratt alumni and faculty that were voted on by the Pratt community.

The Institute is one of the world’s most prestigious colleges of art, design, and architecture, and its alumni and faculty have collectively produced works of art, design, and architecture that have changed the world. The 125 works in “125 Icons” were selected by alumni, faculty, students, and staff from over 300 works by alumni and faculty that comprise Pratt’s online “Icons Gallery.”

The committee selected Tom because of his multidisciplinary innovations and the beauty of his work. I knew him when we were students and he embodied Miss Reedness.

INTERVIEW: Craft and Decorative Arts in America

ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW WITH TOM PATTI 2010 An interview of Tom Patti conducted 2010 January 18 and 19, by William Warmus, for the Archives of American Art's Nanette L. Laitman Documentation Project for Craft and Decorative Arts in America, at Patti's residence, in Miami Beach, Florida.

Patti talks about growing up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in a working-class neighborhood, and playing in and around the General Electric Corp. landfill, the major employer in the area; losing vision in one eye after a childhood accident; he recalls running with a tough crowd during high school and making homemade tattoos for his friends; his probation officer during high school, who encouraged his interest in art; meeting Norman Rockwell, who encouraged him to attend Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York; majoring in industrial design at Pratt… THE INTERVIEW

American Craft Council College of Fellows

Tom Patti was elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2001. The award is an ACC commitment “to honor those who have made an outstanding contribution to the crafts in America… An artist must demonstrate leadership in the field, outstanding ability as an artist and/or teacher, and 25 years or more of professional achievement as an American craftsperson. Awardees are nominated by the active College of Fellows; the distinction is recognition of meaningful contribution to the field not by critics, scholars, or collectors, but by one’s peers. It has become appropriately cherished by its recipients, who on joining the ranks of the College are required only to continue its legacy of nomination and recognition of the successive generations of craftspeople.
