 SANTA FE WINDOWS

The woven blanket of the Navajo inspired my design. The top of each window features a large two-panel section representing a different style of blanket. One side of the window “blanket” uses patterns from the 1800s and the opposite side reveals the more complex arrangements of the 1900s. The geometric motifs become archetypal symbols; the colors and images of the “blankets” changing as increased contact with the Anglo-Americans altered the Navajo’s traditional way of life. The blue represents the skyline, and the bronze the desert. Light reflects off the window symbols asymmetrically to create either a dominant view or a density of the front and back images merging. Like the surrounding landscape, the windows are always changing - responding to the natural environment - a visual dialogue with the land and history of new Mexico.
