TITLE: SPECTRAL-LUMA ELLIPSE
ARCHITECT: IM Pei
DATE: 2009

Commissioned by the museum, Spectral-Luma Ellipse is a site-line specific, high performance, architectural glass entrance wall that optimizes natural light with incandescent. Using state of the art aerospace technology, the glass is structurally integrated within the entrance. Revealing itself to the pedestrian viewer as they enter through the doorway, the work transforms from transparent to translucent and from colorless to a spectral range of color depending on direction of approach.

“Thomas Patti’s technical innovations are matched by esthetic imagination… His lively, light struck …… panels incorporated into the gallery space’s entrance doors, are made of sheets of glass fused with ellipses and colored rectangles that evoke for me windows by Frank Lloyd Wright…” —Grace Glueck, NY Times
